Amazon Backend Keywords: What Actually Works (250-byte rule)

How to structure backend keywords so every byte earns its keep. Common mistakes that get listings suppressed.

Backend keywords are the most misunderstood field in Seller Central. Stuffing it with everything you can think of is exactly the wrong move. Here's the playbook.

The 250-byte rule

Amazon counts bytes, not characters. ASCII chars are 1 byte; some accented chars are 2+. Stay under 250 bytes including spaces.

What NOT to include

  • Words already in your title or bullets (no extra ranking benefit).
  • Competitor brand names (will get listing suppressed).
  • Subjective claims ("best", "cheap").
  • Repeated words or phrases.
